BurrBench
About BurrBench
BurrBench started with a burnt cup of coffee and a stubborn question: why does a $2,000 espresso machine still make mediocre coffee when the grind is wrong? That question sent us down a rabbit hole of burr sets, particle distribution charts, and way too many bags of single-origin beans, and it never really let us go.
Who We Are
BurrBench is run by a small crew of coffee obsessives who came to grinders from different corners of the industry. Our founder, Mara Kesler, spent six years pulling shots and training baristas at a specialty coffee roaster in Portland before moving into equipment consulting for small cafés. Alongside her is Theo Nakamura, a former mechanical engineer who now spends his weekends tearing apart grinders to see how the burr geometry actually affects extraction, and Priya Anand, our resident home-brewing enthusiast who tests every unit the way an ordinary person would — on a kitchen counter, before their first coffee of the day, not in a sterile lab.
We built BurrBench because we were tired of reviews that read like spec sheets copied from a manufacturer's website, or worse, glowing write-ups clearly written by someone who never actually ground a bean. We wanted a site written by people who grind coffee every single day, who know the difference between a grinder that merely looks good on a countertop and one that actually earns its place there.
The Founding Story
The idea for BurrBench came together in 2021, after Mara spent a frustrating month trying to help a friend pick a grinder for their new apartment. Every review she found online contradicted the next, none of them tested for the things that actually matter day to day — retention, static, grind consistency across roast levels, how loud the thing is at 6 a.m. She and Theo started building spreadsheets comparing particle distributions from a dozen popular grinders, just for fun, just to have an honest answer for friends. Word got around. Within a year, that spreadsheet had become a full testing protocol, and BurrBench was born as a place to share it with anyone shopping for a grinder, not just people who happened to know Mara.
How We Review and Choose Products
Every grinder featured on BurrBench is purchased at retail price or provided temporarily by a manufacturer for testing, and every unit goes through the same core protocol before a single word of the review gets written:
- We grind at least five roast levels, from light filter roasts to dark espresso roasts, and measure particle distribution using sieve analysis to see how consistent — or inconsistent — the grind actually is.
- We track retention by weighing beans in and grounds out across multiple doses, because a grinder that hoards three grams of coffee between uses is a grinder that wastes your money.
- We measure grind time, noise levels with a decibel meter, and static buildup, all under normal home-use conditions rather than ideal lab conditions.
- We brew the resulting grounds using at least two methods, typically espresso and pour-over, so we can taste the difference in the cup rather than just look at numbers on a chart.
- We live with each grinder for a minimum of three weeks, using it as our only grinder during that stretch, so we notice the small annoyances and delights that a one-time test can't catch — burr alignment drifting, hopper design quirks, how easy it is to actually clean.
Only after that process is complete do we assign a score and write the review. We rank and recommend grinders based on how they perform against these tests relative to their price, not based on brand reputation or how polished a company's marketing looks.
What Makes BurrBench Trustworthy
We turn down free products with strings attached. If a manufacturer wants guaranteed positive coverage in exchange for a sample, we decline, and we've done so more than once. When we do accept a review unit, we disclose it clearly at the top of the article, and our conclusions are never shared with or approved by the manufacturer before publishing.
Some of our content includes affiliate links, and if you buy a grinder through one of them, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. That income supports the site and the equipment we buy for testing, but it never influences which grinder we recommend — our top picks are decided before any links are added to an article, based purely on test results.
We also revisit our reviews. Grinders change hardware over production runs, prices shift, and new competitors show up that make yesterday's favorite look less impressive. We re-test and update our guides regularly rather than letting old rankings sit untouched for years.
If you have a question about a specific grinder, a testing method you'd like us to explain further, or a suggestion for something we should review next, reach out — we read every message and often end up buying the grinder you asked about. BurrBench exists because we couldn't find the honest, detailed information we wanted when we needed it, and we're still building the site we wish had existed back then.
